Steven Pinker wants to prove that we are living in a world that is better off than it has ever been, and it will only continue to get better. In Enlightenment Now, Pinker argues that the best tools we have come from the 18th century ideals of reason, science, progress and humanism, and we can leverage them in very 21st century ways by using data to tell the story of our modern world.
If you've been feeling like the world has been getting worse off, that violence is on the rise, or that humanity has already "peaked" then this book will change your mind. Delve deep into the world of data where Pinker presents rock-solid arguments for the betterment of humanity as a whole.

About the Original BookEnlightenment Now is Steven Pinker’s love letter to the Enlightenment. Knowledge, he argues, is our best tool against the traps set by atrophying political parties, salacious media, and theocratic social norms. With reason, science, and humanism—the foundational principles of the Enlightenment—and our modern ways of measuring progress by way of data, Pinker elegantly proves that the world is in a better place than it used to be, and things will only keep getting better so long as we stay committed to those principles that have served us and still do.

- Energizing Social-Political Debate based on factual data. A valuable contribution, even though misconstruing philosophic fundamentals – as I gather from reading commentaries. A major theme is that the humanities have separated from science, leaving them out of touch with the real world and subject to authoritarianism on both the left and the right of the political spectrum.
Recognizes Enlightenment developments of “Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress,†but fails to understand the anti-Enlightenment philosophies that hamper these. Still, argues that the major religions have long hampered the Enlightenment’s developments, as does today’s populism and fascism. By addressing many counter arguments to his thesis, the debates are renewed with some vigor, and the Enlightenment may be strengthened?
Notes that “reason†largely succeeded faith as a guide to knowledge and ethics, but fails to distinguish the empiricist approach from the rationalist approach, which is essentially secularized faith. Notes that “science†is reason applied to nature, which makes material progress possible, but fails to see that the rationalist ignores metaphysics and works against the scientific method. Notes that “humanism†is reason applied to human nature, but fails to distinguish individualism from altruism. Notes that “progress†in human flourishing has resulted from enlightenment values and practices, but fails to see that social cooperation is not social coordination.
Thus, Pinker has not truly understood the Enlightenment, but has identified key factors and recognizes their value and influence for human flourishing; plus, identified authoritarianism as the greatest danger to human flourishing. The fact that Pinker lumps Nietzsche and Ayn Rand together shows that he understands neither, and has little respect for philosophic issues as such.
Working through his many topics should provide factual ammunition, debunking many objections, and prove a useful exercise? A good review can be found at thefederalist.com/2018/08/06/steven-pinker-show-defend-enlightenment-without-really-trying/. - This is a good way to digest the basics of (Enlightenment) without reading through all the data proving the author's case.
- Scholar and author Steven Pinker believes that Enlightenment ideals of sympathy and reason are valuable and necessary tools to help all of humanity flourish. ZipReads Summary and Analysis of Enlightenment Now by Steven Pinker gives a detailed overview of this, Pinker’s seminal work, in which he takes on a lot of the urban legends, myths, and downright false information that is peddled by both sides of the political spectrum. Crowded with charts and statistics, it is nonetheless, according to this summary, a worthwhile read for anyone with an open mind, or who wants his or her mind opened.
This summary can be read in less than twenty minutes and is a thorough analysis of the book. It will enable the busy reader to decide whether or not the book is worth the price of admission. - This "Summary & Analysis of Enlightenment Now" published by Zip Reads is a useful guide to the contents of Enlightenment Now - but only if you have read the superb original version written by Steven Pinker. I do not agree with the other reviewers that this summary can substitute for reading the original. However, the Zip Reads book is a much better summary of Enlightenment Now than the one published by Concise Reading, which is poorly written and poorly laid out.
